Time is running out to book kids activities at Autumn conference!

September 12, 2017 By Rachel-VETNI

The deadline is Monday 18th September to book kids activities at AVSPNI autumn conference!!  This year is going to be the best yet with a selection of outdoor and indoor activates to keep the young ones amused while you enjoy some great lectures in the comfort of the fabulous Slieve Donard!  We start the Saturday off with our Lego and clay workshop brought to us by Northern Irelands very own ‘Bricks4kidz’.  These workshops are the only kind in Northern Ireland comprising both fun and education with Lego and Clay.

The Saturday afternoon will be exceptional for those who enjoy some outdoor fun!  We ask that the kiddies wrap up warm (it is Northern Ireland after all) with outdoor clothing and head to Castlewellan where they will be partaking in Archery and Kayaking!  I’m pretty sure this will be one of the highlights of the weekend!  For those who like the cosy indoors, we have exotic animals coming to visit us with Eco Mantella.  In the evening they can relax in front of a film to end an incredible day of fun!

On Sunday morning Louie the Entertainer will bring his fabulous magic show to conference kids!  Followed by Swim time.  (Please note that Sunday activities require adult supervision).

If you wish for your little/big ones to join in on the conference kids fun, please book before the 18th September as we cannot guarantee that they will be accommodated after this.  We don’t want anyone to be disappointed!  This includes those wishing to use our crèche facilities on the Saturday.

If you would like more information about the children’s programme at conference have a look at our conference brochure

Joint Autumn AMR meeting at AFBI

September 12, 2017 By Rachel-VETNI

In AFBI at Hillsborough last Wednesday, our large animal vets were treated to three fantastic lectures on AMR at our joint autumn meeting.  Our speakers Gwen Rees, who is currently completing a PhD aimed at understanding veterinary medicine use by UK dairy farmers within the context of antimicrobial resistance and Andrea Turner a Senior Clinical Training Scholar in Bovine Health Management at Bristol University, both delivered our two main lectures on the day on the ‘“Responsible use of medicines on farms’ with excellent feedback from our vets.  This was followed by our bonus topic  ‘Antibiotic resistance patterns of bacteria from dairy farm milk samples in Ireland’ brought by Patrick Greene from the Ulster University.

Afterwards our vets and guests got to enjoy a delicious supper which was much appreciated after a day of CPD.  A great day had by both NIVA, AVSPNI and guests!  Many thanks to our kind sponsors at CEVA and the Ulster University.

Come have an eely good time at AVSPNI Summer day 17!

May 23, 2017 By Rachel-VETNI

Summer Day this year will be at the Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative at Toomebridge on 14th June.  We have an excellent day planned, starting with an introduction to the eel fishery by the Chairman, Pat Close.  We will then tour the facilities and hear more about the history of the fishery and some of the complexities of the sector. Our guest speaker for the day is Conor Dolan.  As a Parasitologist at AFBI he is involved in eel health and welfare. Conor is a second year PHD student and has received an award for his presentation on the sustainable management of Lough Neagh eels.  This industry-focussed project is the first to be funded by the Lough Neagh Fisherman’s Co-operative Society.   He will also be discussing the link between Brexit and eels.  After our tour of the Fishery we will make our way to the WhiteRiver hotel next door to enjoy a delicious 3 course meal and yes, there is eel on the menu for those eager to try it.  In planning the day, some VetNI staff had a sneak preview – its going to be a fascinating day!

To find out more about our ‘Eel day’ have a look at our flyer here!

To book your place (only registered delegates allowed on the day) send us an email at info@vetni.co.uk
